Jose Ortega
Jose Ortega is a vibrant K-5 learning community that includes stimulating academic programs, art, physical education, a community garden, recycling/ composting, full inclusion, a yearbook, and an active student council. There is a Cantonese Bilingual program for grades K-3 and then those children enter general education in English. Children identified as GATE students begin that curriculum in grades 4-5.
Unlike many SF schools, Jose Ortega's playground is set in beautiful natural surroundings: an expansive view of the ocean on the west and the tree covered hill of Brooks Park on the north side of the playground. The classrooms all have plenty of natural light and views.
At Jose Ortega school starts at 7:50 am and ends at 1:50 pm. There is breakfast from 7:30 am, so many students arrive early. A school lunch is also offered. There is busing to Jose Ortega. There is also after- school childcare that includes academics (homework), recreation, and enrichment activities. There is an active PTA, and several family events thruout the school year.
